Don’t Get Stuck in a Genre Rut

When I was younger I used to only read Stephen King, R.L. Stein, Dean Koontz, you get my drift, pretty much thriller and horror only.  When I was in High School, I stared my first job as a barista and found my co-worker’s copy of Nora Robert’s novel Lawless.  That was my intro into great Romance novels.  I very rarely left that comfort zone of those authors though. I had no idea the books I was missing out on.

The past several years I have made changes in the way I choose what books to read and I have been picking up ones that I normally wouldn’t.  I join reading challenges that prompt me to choose books outside my comfort zone.  We are two months into the year so far and my genre resume has already been so vast, Literary Women’s Fiction, Contemporary Realistic Fiction, New Adult Romance, Literary Fiction, Crime and Comedy Thriller, Poetry, and Non-fiction Memoir.

Here are a few that I have thoroughly enjoyed recently:

I hope that this will give you the push to expand your reading beyond your comfort zone as well.  There is a whole world out there to explore.  Don’t be afraid to check them out.

July Recap

4 Books
2,182 pages
Average Rating 4.25

What Doesn’t Kill You 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Bayou Myth 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Digital Fortress 🌟🌟🌟🌟
IT 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I finally got out of my 2 book slump!  Whew!  July was a crazy month for me so I am very proud that I completed these 4.  I am so ready for life to resemble some kind of normalcy.  I need a vacation so bad it’s not even funny anymore.  Our planned trip this year has been cancelled and rescheduled 3x so far.  Which I completely understand, and I want to be safe, but it is just torturous.  You get your hopes up and then… Just kidding!  Now we are looking at November.
I am 7 books behind schedule on my year goal 😫 however 2020 is not like a normal year that’s for sure.  I certainly don’t want to rely on my vacation to catch up, just in case, so we might need to schedule a little weekend getaway to unplug and relax.

Book 19:  Maine

We all know this story and I am so excited to FINALLY read it.  It is has been sitting on my bookshelf for YEARS and I am a asshamed to admit that I have been avoiding it due to the size, 1089 pages. 😳 I knew that this would take a long time to read and did not want to derail my reading goal so I always put it off, well not any longer.  I got the brillant idea to listen to it on audio instead.  It’s still gonna take me some time with 45 hours of listening to do but at least I can multi task while doing it.

“They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they were grown-up men and women who had gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But none of them could withstand the force that drew them back to Derry, Maine to face the nightmare without an end and the evil without a name…”

June Recap

June Recap:

2 Books

866 pages

Average Rating 5.0

Chasing Evil 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Dark Places 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Another 2 book month but I’m not upset.  It looks worse then it actually was.  I was reading 2 more books in June but one I finished on 7/3 so technically that will count for July and I am half way through IT.  It is just a beast of a book, I am listening to the audio version and it is 45 hours long!  I know a lot of you can blaze right through that but I am not there yet! 😂  I have a full time job and 10 animals to care for (2 dogs, 6 tortoises, and 2 bearded dragons).  I used to have a commute where it would have taken no time at all to get through but with the Rona I now work at home.  Not complaining about that, it is the best thing to come out of this pandemic.

June was packed full of family visits though so not a whole lot of time was spent reading.  I keep telling myself not to worry that I will catch up during my vacation but my vacation keeps getting cancelled and rescheduled.😭  Originally booked in April, then moved to September, now currently set for November but if we can’t get this pandemic under control I feel it will not be happening at all this year.  Then I will reach the end of the year and be no where near my 50 book goal.😫

The books this month were awesome picks however!  Both Thrillers that I really enjoyed.  Be sure to check out my reviews page!

I is for….

I is for …. IT! 🎈🤡

Stephen King is my #1 and always has been.  Surprisingly, I have never read IT but it is on my TBR this year, coming up soon in fact.  The size of the book was just so intimidating that I have put it off.  Until now!  I absolutely LOVE the new movies Chapter 1 and 2. Good and creepy scary just like I like them.

🎈

Clearly I like Irish books as well.  I am definitely a sucker for an Ireland setting, I have always been drawn to them. I recently did a DNA test and discovered that I am majority Irish heritage, so it makes sense why I have an affinity towards them.

🎈

I recently watched a documentary about John Grisham’s The Innocent Man and I can’t wait to read the book now.  This is his first nonfiction work.

“If you believe that in America you are innocent until proven guilty, this book will shock you. If you believe in the death penalty, this book will disturb you. If you believe the criminal justice system is fair, this book will infuriate you.”

F is for …

F is for …. Fire 🔥

A whole lot of “firey” reads here!  I have read about half this shelf and some are a few of my favorites.

King is always a top author of mine, my first favorite that I can remember.  I have to thank my mom for first introducing me to him.

Find Me by J.S. Monroe was a very good read!  I enjoyed it from start to finish. Kept me guessing every step of the way.

After the first half, I thought I had a good grasp on what was going on. Once the second half started, it threw me for a loop and I didn’t know what to think.

How deep is your love? Would you refuse to believe your loved one was dead when everyone around you thinks your crazy and you need to move on? I love Jar’s commitment and rooted for him the entire time. A big recommendation to all thriller lovers for this one!
