New Normal

It’s been a long time since I posted here. 2023 was a busy/hard year for my household. In previous posts, I had explained that my husband and I had started a new business for breeding reptiles, Wild Roots Reptiles. This quickly took up the majority of my time and did not leave any extra for reading, posting, or even having much of a life at all.

As the year carried on, mental health took a hard decline for my husband, which also affected mine as well. Somewhere along the road, I lost my best friend to depression and alcohol and I never got him back. In December, he took his life; transferring his pain and suffering over to me. Something I knew he would have never wanted to do if he could have avoided it. I accepted it with a shattered heart.

Widowhood is a life that I would never wish on anyone. It’s a struggle that you were never prepared for, and there’s no manual on how to work through the Rollercoaster of emotions or how to keep moving forward. But I found in myself a strength I never knew was there and a determination to find joy again. Somehow… someway… finding my new normal.

And so began my Living Life tour.

I began taking myself to dinner and buying my own flowers. I started having girls night every other month and even hosted a poker night. I started on a sleave tattoo, went to a rock concert, a classic car show, and even a couple quick road trips to Montana. I have spent a lot of time with my family and friends who have been there for me through this entire time. Grief takes a village to navigate and you never get through it, you just learn to absorb it into your life. It becomes a part of you.

After a few months, I began cooking and reading books again. Soon, I hope to start writing reviews and posting. Starting here with this one.

Life is still hard, having to manage a household by yourself. I have had to sell off a large portion of the animals, as difficult as that decision was, but I still want to keep Wild Roots going in some capacity. Have had to learn how to fix things myself and ask for help when I can’t. That’s harder to do, I think.

Month after month, I learn more about who I am and what I’m made of. I have slowly put the pieces of my shattered heart back together. That doesn’t mean that I don’t have days that bring me to knees, but I make the choice to stand back up every time. I am eternally grateful for the life and love I had with him for so many years. I will never forget my past but I have a future, one that I am looking forward to, and I will give it my all to make it the best I can.

For anyone that feels like they are alone and don’t think they can keep going, please stay. You are needed here. I know that it feels hopeless and that no one could possibly understand what you are going through, but you would be surprised by how many of us are out there and how many people are more than willing to listen. We have so many options available now, don’t be afraid to speak up and ask for help.

🏅Top Shelf Tuesday 🏅

Happy Tuesday everyone!  Just spent most of the day getting my blog back online. 😵 Had an update issue occur and took me forever to figure it out.  But I got it resolved thanks to the help of Hostgator support!  Whew, back in business and on with the show.

This week’s pick is:

The Host
The Host Book 1
by Stephanie Meyer
Science Fiction, Aliens, New Adult
Paperback
Published by Little Brown and Company, May 2008

I first read this book on vacation in Bora Bora. The Pic of it in my garden is a sad substitute. Whenever I think about it, I am drawn back to that beautiful paradise.
I picked my copy up at a thrift store, I really enjoyed the movie.  Seeing how thick it was I knew there had to have so much more to it than what the movie included.
As a normal rule, I like to watch the movie first then read the book.  For me, this works out as I love watching movies too. I find that if I read a great book, love it, and then watch the movie, I am usually disappointed.  However, if I watch the movie, love it, then read the book, it’s even better but I still love the movie.  Win, win. 😁

Synopsis:
The Earth has been invaded by an alien species, they not only invaded Earth but they take over human bodies as well.  Melanie Stryder won’t go without a fight when Wanderer takes over her body.  As Wanderer is flooded with all Melanie’s memories she is compelled to find the family and the love that was left behind and still in hiding.  However, when they find the them, Melanie’s family is not so thrilled that an alien has invaded her.
There is so much more to this story that I don’t want to give away the best parts if you haven’t read it or watched the movie.  It’s a mix of Sci-Fi, Thriller, and romance.

Just a little view from Bora Bora!

🌟🌟
Classic, Magical Realism

Synopsis:
Story of the Buendia family in the mythical town of Macondo. It follows the lives of seven generations, their successes and failures, children and deaths. When Jose Arcadio Buendia and Ursula Iguaran his wife and cousin, leave Columbia and set out to find their utopia. After having a dream one night one their journey, Jose establishes the town of Macondo.
Over the years, the town becomes exposed to the outside world and eventually is brought to ruin. The Buendia family may have been cursed after all, as predicted by Ursula in the very beginning.

My thoughts:
I am sorry to say but I found this book to be boring. I struggled to follow along with so many people with the same names. I Googled a family tree for it so that I could have anything to help keep them straight but it was still difficult. Ultamately I struggle with books built upon symbolism. I read books for the enjoyment and not necessarily to promote deep thinking. I like deep feeling, ones that bring out emotions and make you analyze what you are feeling or cause unexpected feelings. I don’t want to have to interpret every little thing throughout to discover their true meaning. “The ghosts are symbols of the past and the haunting nature it has over Macondo.”
However, I can see why this is a Classic for sure and why so many people love it. It has some great magical realism throughout. My favorite was Remedios the Beauty, said to be the most beautiful woman on Macondo. She is thought to be cursed, unintentionally causing the death of several men who lust after/love her. One man falling to his death after watching her bath. Instead of blood escaping his body it was an amber colored oil that smelled of Remedios the Beauty.

Skipping Christmas

As the big day nears, I was in the spirit to read a Christmas book.
🎄
One of my favorite Christmas movies is Christmas with the Kranks so this year I wanted to read Skipping Christmas by John Grisham. I have had it on the To Be Read shelf for years and I can’t believe that it has taken me this long to read it. Well this is the year! As this year will be so different than any other due to Covid, it felt very fitting. I’m sure that there are so many people out there just wanting to skip the holiday altogether. I don’t blame you. Unfortunately, we can’t escape on a cruise (yikes, no way) or to an island paradise somewhere and forget. Hopefully you are still able to enjoy the season with family and love ones safely.
☃️
If you haven’t seen the movie or read the book, I suggest you do! It is sooo cute and funny, I just love them both!

Book 26:  Montana

Living in northern Idaho, summer time here means wild fire season.  And this year is no different, I am currently surrounded by fires, one is only about 5 miles from my house.  We had a horrible wind storm on Monday which caused massive damage and downed powerlines.  These powerlines caused a record 58 wild fires. Living in a constant state of alertness, to be prepared in the event of evacuation, smoke filling the air.  Its a scary place to be right now.

A book about Smoke Jumpers seems fitting to read now.

🔥

Blurb:  His name is Connor Ford and he falls like an angel of mercy from the sky, braving the flames to save the woman he loves but knows he cannot have. For Julia Bishop is the partner of his best friend and fellow “smoke jumper,” Ed Tully. Julia loves them both–until a fiery tragedy on Montana’s Snake Mountain forces her to choose between them, and burns a brand on all their hearts.

In the wake of the fire, Connor embarks on a harrowing journey to the edge of human experience, traveling the world’s worst wars and disasters to take photographs that find him fame but never happiness. Reckless of a life he no longer wants, again and again he dares death to take him, until another fateful day on another continent, he must walk through fire once more…

Memorial Drive:  A Daughter’s Memoir 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

August was a great month for me.  I felt rejuvenated!  A whole new energy and I was able to get a lot of reading in.  I had a lot of inventory to do at work so it was a great opportunity to get some audio books done too.  I figured I would start with my 100 books to read in a Lifetime list and found the ones my library had on audio to download.  I knew that reading some of the classics would be tough so I figured audio would be best.

My stand out of the month is Memorial Drive:  A Daughter’s Memoir, this book has moved me and will stay apart of me forever.  It is so beautifully written, poetic storytelling.  A story full of strength and such insight that really resonated with me.

What Doesn’t Kill You 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Bayou Myth 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Digital Fortress 🌟🌟🌟🌟
IT 🌟🌟🌟🌟

I finally got out of my 2 book slump!  Whew!  July was a crazy month for me so I am very proud that I completed these 4.  I am so ready for life to resemble some kind of normalcy.  I need a vacation so bad it’s not even funny anymore.  Our planned trip this year has been cancelled and rescheduled 3x so far.  Which I completely understand, and I want to be safe, but it is just torturous.  You get your hopes up and then… Just kidding!  Now we are looking at November.
I am 7 books behind schedule on my year goal 😫 however 2020 is not like a normal year that’s for sure.  I certainly don’t want to rely on my vacation to catch up, just in case, so we might need to schedule a little weekend getaway to unplug and relax.

June Recap

June Recap:

Chasing Evil 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Dark Places 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Another 2 book month but I’m not upset.  It looks worse then it actually was.  I was reading 2 more books in June but one I finished on 7/3 so technically that will count for July and I am half way through IT.  It is just a beast of a book, I am listening to the audio version and it is 45 hours long!  I know a lot of you can blaze right through that but I am not there yet! 😂  I have a full time job and 10 animals to care for (2 dogs, 6 tortoises, and 2 bearded dragons).  I used to have a commute where it would have taken no time at all to get through but with the Rona I now work at home.  Not complaining about that, it is the best thing to come out of this pandemic.

June was packed full of family visits though so not a whole lot of time was spent reading.  I keep telling myself not to worry that I will catch up during my vacation but my vacation keeps getting cancelled and rescheduled.😭  Originally booked in April, then moved to September, now currently set for November but if we can’t get this pandemic under control I feel it will not be happening at all this year.  Then I will reach the end of the year and be no where near my 50 book goal.😫

The books this month were awesome picks however!  Both Thrillers that I really enjoyed.  Be sure to check out my reviews page!

The Prom Night Murders 🌟

Well unfortunately May was the worst reading month I have had all year.  😢

I got shanghaied by the The Prom Night Murders and it pretty much wrecked it for me.  There were several times where I told myself to just stop reading it and move on but I just couldn’t.  I must finish it, I have never not finished a book in my life.

June however has started well and I look forward to great comeback.
