Three to Get Deadly by Janet Evanovich
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Crime Thriller, Comedy Thriller
“I wasn’t sure why I was still working for Vinnie. I suspected it had something to do with the title. Bounty Hunter. It held a certain cat he. Even better, the job didn’t require panty hose.”
Stephanie Plum is at it again and this time the bodies are really piling up.
“Christ, Stephanie, this makes four! Four dead bodies. Eight if you count the ones in the cellar.” “It’s not my fault!” I stuffed my fists onto my hips. “You think I want to keep finding dead bodies? This is no picnic for either, you know.”
Stephanie is working the case of Uncle Mo, arrested for carrying a concealed weapon and no showed for his court hearing. A beloved member of the burg, Mo has owned an ice cream and candy shop since the 50s.
“This is Uncle Mo!” I said. “I can’t apprehend Uncle Mo. Everyone will hate me. My mother will hate me. My best friend will hate me.”
Hoping she can very politely stop by the shop and remind Mo he missed his court date and help him reschedule it, Stephane finds out that Uncle Mo’s shop is closed and he is no where to be found. The problem is that no one will help her find him, everyone is convinced he could never have done anything wrong. The more Stephanie digs for clues to his whereabouts, the more she uncovers that Uncle Mo may not be the saint that everyone thinks he is.
As several bodies of local drug dealers turn up, Lulu, ex prostitute turned bounty Hunter in training, joins up with Stephanie to add her expertise to the mix.
“The body bounced once on the hood, and then smacked into the windshield and stuck like a squashed bug, staring in at us, mouth agape, eyes unseeing. “I got a body stuck to my windshield!” Lulu yelled. “I can’t drive like this! I can’t get my wipers to work. How am I suppose to drive with a dead guy on my wipers?”
“Hold on,” Lulu said, pulling a red flowered scarf from her coat pocket, tying the scarf on Harp’s foot like a flag. “Don’t want to get a ticket. I hear the police are real picky about having things sticking out of your trunk.” Especially dead guys.”
As Stephanie gets deeper into the investigation, a group of masked men start to threaten her, she better leave Mo alone, or else…
An enjoyable, easy, fast read. This series is really the perfect book when you just need a good, funny, quick read to boost your spirits, one that of course includes murder and mayhem. I didn’t think this book was as funny as the first two in the series but it picked up the last half.
My favorite part about this series are the characters. I loved that Lulu is becoming a bigger role, she is such a boisterous character and what a perfect partner for Stephanie. I am just waiting for Morelli and Stephanie to finally become a couple, enough of this game playing already! So much sexual tension. Grandma Mazur is certainly a wonderful character and even though she didn’t play a very big role in this book, she is still one of my favorites. Hilarious and loves danger, she gets herself into trouble constantly. This time around she is on the hunt for a man!
“How was church?” I asked. “Boring,” she said. “A big waste of time. We got a bunch of duds in that congregation. Nobody hot to trot. I’m gonna try the bingo hall tonight. I hear they got some live lookers coming to bingo.”
