Skipping Christmas by John Grisham
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Commercial Fiction, Holiday
“She began glancing around the deli. Nora knew exactly what she was thinking. Who can I tell first? The Kranks are skipping Christmas! No party! No tree! Nothing but money in their pockets so they can blow it on a cruise.”
Nora and Luther Krank’s only daughter Blair has joined the Peace Corps and left for a year to Peru. Christmas without her just won’t be the same. Luther gets a brilliant idea to skip the circus of Christmas altogether, save money, and take a ten day cruise on Christmas Day instead. It’s a full boycott, no decorating, no cards, no parties.
Everything is going according to plan until Blair calls Christmas Eve to tell them she is coming home for Christmas with a new fiancé… Surprise! She wants to show Enrique what a traditionally American Christmas looks like.
“She assumed we’d be here with a tree and gifts and a party, same as always. Who would ever dream that two otherwise sensible adults would skip Christmas and go on a cruise.”
The Kranks have 6 hours before Blair’s plane lands to pull off a Christmas miracle.
“Standing there at the edge of the street, light snow gathering on his wool cap and collar, gazing at his freshly decorated house with almost the entire neighborhood packed into it, Luther paused to count his blessings.” “Blessed with friends and neighbors who would sacrifice their plans for Christmas Eve to rescue him.”
“Skipping Christmas. What a ridiculous idea. Maybe next year.”
This is such a wonderful, light hearted, funny, Holiday read. It is less than 200 pages, so it’s a quick and easy read. It is perfect for all ages during the holiday season. The film adaptation Christmas with the Kranks follows the book very closely. It is one of my favorite Christmas movies! I would certainly recommend to anyone wanting a light Christmas reading during the holiday season. It would also make a great Christmas gift.
